The idea to this game originated at the beginning of the seventies during the Sports Academy in a summer sport camp.
We were roughly 50 sports students who would have loved to play tennis. Unfortunately, there were only two tennis courts at our disposal, which lead to unsatisfactory waiting times. I suggested to remove the net, put up two mini football goals and play tennis in two teams onto two goals. The idea was referred to as crazy and I was laughed at.
Later in physical education classes the idea awakened again as a warm-up game. Already at the first attempt the pupils tried to extend the warm-up to the whole lesson. Consequently, I tried out various rackets and designed compressed wood rackets, which were manufactured in our school workshops. When it comes to the ball it's pretty much the same. From the volley softball to the floorball, everything was tested in the gym until the best solution was found. At times it was a painful issue for the pupils, because rackets hurtled through the gym, hit heads, backs or shins. Nevertheless the pupils did not want to stop playing. This gave me to the idea of providing the rackets with a safety loop.
After having improved the material the game gained fluency and it enabled me to gradually adjust and improve the rules of the game. Along the way, from an initially rather chaotic game a controlled, pretty fast and very intensive team game emerged. It's no wonder that SMOLBALL™, also known under the working title "Tenniball", is called the world's fastest team sport. |
